How To Look Up Prior Crimes & Arrests Made in Marion County Ohio
Criminal records can provide you with the complete picture, detailing both a person’s arrest and whether or not a court found them guilty of the charges brought against them. To access criminal records, you can conduct a search with online tools or by contacting the court that handled the matter.
In Marion County, there are two primary courts for handling criminal matters. The first, the Marion County Court of Common Pleas, handles serious criminal cases referred to as felonies.4 You can search for these types of criminal cases using their Online Case Lookup Tool.
To begin your search, under the “Site” options, select Common Pleas. You then have the option to search by name, case number, type or attorney.
The case type search option is a great choice if you are not sure of the person’s name, but you know the specific city where the offense occurred. Otherwise, the most common way to search for criminal records is by a defendant’s name.
When you conduct a name search, select criminal under the case type. You also have the option to select a specific status. Case status options include, among others, bench warrant, appeal, open, probation violation and more.
In addition, you can also set a date range for when the case was filed.
Once you conduct your search, the results page will populate with all criminal cases that match the search criteria you entered. The search results will provide you with the following information for each matching case:
- Case Number
- Case Type
- Date Filed
- Initiating Action (Charges)
- Party Name
- Party Type
- Date of Birth
- Case Status
To view additional information, click on the case number. The online criminal records contain the following three sections:
Party: In this section, you can view additional information about the defendant, such as their address and any aliases. You can also view contact information for any attorney involved in the matter. Lastly, this section will contain the disposition and the date it was issued.
Charge: Here, you can view information on every crime that the defendant was charged with. This will include a description, the degree of the offense and the state statute that was violated. You can also view the date the offense occurred and the disposition information for the specific charge.
Docket: This last section contains a chronological listing of every court document and hearing that occurred in a criminal case.
If you would like to access the complete criminal record, you will have to request the information or search in person. For details on how to access the records through these options, you can contact the Marion County Clerk of Courts. They are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

One last option is to use the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Corrections’ Offender Search Tool if you want to conduct a statewide search for past crimes and arrests.8 This is a broad and free search tool that allows you to search a person’s criminal record, regardless of their current incarceration status.
To use this tool, you can search by a person’s inmate number or name. If you search by name, you can also filter your results to individuals currently incarcerated, under supervision, or violators at large.
All matching results will provide you with the person’s name, inmate number and whether or not they are currently incarcerated or under supervision. When you click on a person’s name, you can view their complete Ohio criminal record. Here, you can see summary information about the person (e.g., date of birth, sex, race), their admission date, and institution status.
You can also see a person’s mugshot.
There is also a separate offense information section that lists all charges that a person was convicted of. For each conviction, you can view a description of the charge, degree of offense, and sentencing information (date and length). You can also view case information such as the docket number, judge and the county where the case was tried.
There is a final section that also provides a summary of all sentencing information (minimum and maximum incarceration length) and information on when the inmate was or is eligible for release and parole.
You are now prepared to conduct a search of a person’s arrest and criminal history. In the next section, you will learn how to help someone post bail that is currently arrested.
How To Cover Bail in Marion County (Overview)
When a person is arrested for a crime, it may be some time before a court determines whether they are innocent or guilty of the charges brought against them. During that time, a judge often sets a bail amount, which, if posted, allows the person to stay out of jail while their case is being adjudicated.
If you want to assist a person in covering their bail amount, you have a couple of options. Your first choice is to post the amount yourself (often referred to as the “self-bail” process). If you have sufficient funds, you can post bail with cash.
However, if the bail amount is higher, you can use a piece of real property or other valuable item with equity in it to post as collateral for the bail. This is referred to as a property bond.
Alternatively, you can use a bail bondsman to handle this process. They will post the bail; however, you will have to pay them a fee for this service. Usually, the fee is 10% of whatever the person’s bail is set at.
There are benefits and drawbacks to either option. Posting the bail yourself places the entire risk on you if the person does not show up for a future court hearing.10
In that case, you may never get the money or collateral back that you used for the person’s bail. However, with a bail bondsman, you are paying a 10% fee that you will never get back regardless of the person’s compliance.
For questions about bond information you can contact the Multi County Correctional Center at 740-387-7434 or the Marion Municipal Court at 740-387-0843.
You now know what to consider when posting bail for someone who has been arrested. You are also prepared to search for Marion County arrest records and other types of criminal information; use these tools and resources whenever arrest information is being sought.
